The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised serious concerns over what it described as a calculated attempt to impose a one-party system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, called for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Amupitan Joash, accusing the commission of bias and unlawful interference in party affairs.
The ADC alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is using INEC to weaken opposition parties as part of a broader strategy to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.
INEC had earlier announced the delisting of key ADC figures, including David Mark and the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, citing compliance with a court order to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
Reacting to the development, Mark described the move as a direct threat to democracy, warning that it could undermine the party’s participation in upcoming elections in Osun and Ekiti states, as well as its scheduled congresses and national convention in April.
He further alleged that the ultimate goal is to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerges as the sole viable candidate in 2027, despite widespread economic hardship and insecurity.
The ADC leadership also highlighted its internal crisis, which began in 2025 following disputes over party leadership, leading to multiple court cases and factional claims.
Mark, however, insisted that the current leadership emerged through due process and with INEC’s prior acknowledgment, stressing that any attempt to undermine the party would have serious consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
