The Majority Leader Adamawa State House of Assembly and Member Representing Demsa Constituency, Hon. Mrs Kate Raymond Mamuno FCNA, has asked youths to shun the nationwide protest.
The lawmaker also urged them to remain calm and be law-abiding citizens.
Hon. Mamuno made the call in Demsa Local Government Area, during a one-day meeting she convened with leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) from various wards and other critical stakeholders across the constituency to discuss the implications of the planned protest.
The only female lawmaker in the state Assembly urged stakeholders to engage both religious and community leaders in praying for peace and unity of the country, and to counsel their followers on the importance of peaceful coexistence.
She said though the citizens have fundamental right of peaceful protest as stated in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, but the stakeholders at level are considering the consequences of the protest especially on the nation’s stability and unity.
Hon. Mamuno who doubles as Chairman House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development reminded them on the lessons learned from similar protests in some part of Africa and Middle East.
The lawmaker urged the stakeholders at all levels to visit their various political units to enlighten their people on the need for them to be aware of disruptions that may arise from protests that escalate into violence and unrest.
She added, the 8th Adamawa Assembly had already adopted 7 point resolutions as they are aware of the grievances and concerns that may drive individuals and groups to take to decide to planned nationwide protest, adding that, engaging in constructive dialogue can lead to more effective and lasting solutions.
Hon. Kate further informed them that, the lawmakers have passed resolution urging the Government at all levels to redouble it effort in implementing policies and programs aimed at addressing the causes of street protest.
The lawmaker also commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his giant stride especially in the areas of education, Health, infrastructural development, youth and women empowerment, reactivation of skills training centers, and allowing women to actively participate in the development of the society.
She further salutes the “FRESH AIR” Governor for restoring peace among diverse religious and ethic groups and ensuring accountability, transparency, and justice for all Adamawa People.
