As workers across the country marked this year’s Workers’ Day, the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN), Adamawa State chapter, joined the celebration with a renewed sense of identity and inclusion, describing it as a historic moment for tricycle operators in the state.
Speaking to newsmen, the State Chairman of TOAN, Comrade Bashir Jimeta, said the participation of TOAN in the 2025 May Day celebration symbolizes a new dawn of recognition and integration into the formal labor movement in Adamawa State.
Comrade Bashir highlighted that the union’s recent full registration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) marks a significant transformation—from an informal group to a formally recognized affiliate of the TUC.
“This day means a lot to us. It is not just about celebration; it is a reflection of our journey towards recognition and empowerment. Being part of the TUC in Adamawa State gives us a stronger voice and a clearer platform to advocate for the welfare of our members,” he stated.
Comrade Jimeta used the occasion to salute Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his administration’s people-oriented projects and continuous efforts in uplifting the lives of citizens, including those in the transport sector.
He also called on the government to consider initiating targeted empowerment programmes for members of TOAN, especially in the areas of access to credit facilities, training, and welfare support, noting that such initiatives would go a long way in boosting productivity and economic resilience among tricycle operators.
The TOAN chairman further appealed to all Keke Napep riders and owners in the state to remain united and committed to the growth and development of the union, stressing that only through unity and collaboration can the union achieve its goals.
“This is our time to build, to organize, and to serve. We urge all members to embrace this new chapter with dedication and discipline,” Comrade Jimeta said.
The inclusion of TOAN in the May Day celebration is seen by many as a positive step towards the broader integration of informal sector workers into formal labor structures in Nigeria.
