The Senator representing Adamawa Central, Aminu Iya Abbas, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa State, promising to sustain and expand the achievements of the current administration under Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Speaking during a press conference inYola, on Friday, April 3, 2026, the lawmaker expressed strong confidence in his chances, noting that he has the experience and capacity required to govern the state effectively.
“I have the interest to go for the governorship of Adamawa State and emerge successful,” Abbas stated, describing himself as a credible alternative among the aspirants.
The senator highlighted his legislative credentials, revealing that he serves on more than 30 committees in the National Assembly.
He added that he has sponsored several bills across critical sectors such as education, health, and technology, with about six currently at advanced legislative stages.
Abbas also pointed to his constituency projects, which include the provision of water facilities, construction of classrooms, educational support initiatives, youth and women empowerment programmes, and medical outreach services.
.He further disclosed that he sponsored motions that contributed to the establishment of a military barracks in Mubi.
On party primaries, Abbas dismissed speculations about consensus arrangements, stressing that the Electoral Act accommodates both consensus and direct primaries.
“As a member of the committee that worked on the Electoral Act, we made provisions for both consensus and direct primaries. Where consensus fails, you go for direct primaries. I believe all aspirants in Adamawa should be given a fair opportunity,” he said.
Addressing security, the senator acknowledged ongoing national challenges but described Adamawa as relatively peaceful, noting only pockets of insecurity in parts of Lamurde and communities bordering the Sambisa forest.
On the broader political landscape, Abbas emphasized the importance of a multi-party system, warning against a one-party dominance in the country. He also dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress is responsible for crises within opposition parties, citing internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party since 2023.
Despite his governorship ambition, the lawmaker reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Fintiri, pledging to support any candidate endorsed by the governor.
