The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, on Wednesday announced the resignation of 15 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during plenary.
The Speaker made the announcement on the floor of the House, formally informing members that the affected lawmakers had withdrawn their membership from the party.
Those who resigned include the Speaker himself; the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Buba Jidjiwa jada-Mbulo constituency; Kefas Calvin Toungo constituency; Bulus Geoffrey Leko-Koma constituency, Haruna Jilantikiri Madagali constituency, Kefas Emmanuel Song constituency, Ahmed Jingi Belel Maiha constituency; Hon. Moses Yerima Zah Michika constituency and Hon. Kate Raymond Mamuno Demsa constituency.
Others are Pwamwakeno Mackondo Numan constituency)m; Adun John Alaba Uba-Gaya constituency; Bulus Kantom Shelleng constituency; Musa Mahmud Kallamu Mayo Belwa Consistency; and Japhet Hammanjabu Verre constituency.
Reacting to the development, Musa Mahmud Kallamu, who is the Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Information, attributed the mass resignation to the lingering national crisis within the PDP.
He explained that the internal wrangling and unresolved leadership issues at the national level of the party significantly influenced the decision taken by the lawmakers.
According to him, the action was not taken lightly but became necessary in view of the prevailing uncertainties surrounding the party’s national structure.
Kallamu, however, did not disclose the immediate political direction of the lawmakers following their resignation but affirmed their total loyalty and support to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, whom they described as their political leader.
He added that the group would soon make public their new political platform, assuring constituents that further details regarding their next political move would be announced in due course.
The Chairman further stated that the lawmakers had earlier consulted and intimated their constituents about the decision before making it public, explaining that the move was discussed at the constituency level and received the understanding and support of the people they represent.
