Kallamu Launches Training and Mentorship Programme to Equip Mayo Belwa Students

In a renewed commitment to uplift education in Mayo Belwa, Hon. Musa Mahmud Kallamu, member representing Mayo Belwa Constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, has launched the MMK Training and Mentorship Programme — an initiative designed to equip secondary school students with academic and moral guidance to excel in their careers.
Speaking during the official launch in Mayo Belwa, Hon. Kallamu said the initiative was borne out of his passion to revive educational excellence in the area and mentor young people to realize their full potential.
“ I’m speaking from the depth of my heart. Education is one of the pillars that brought me to this position as your representative. If I wasn’t educated, I wouldn’t have been where I am today,” Kallamu said.
The lawmaker recalled his days as a student and facilitator under the MiODA programme, which he described as the foundation that once revolutionized education in Mayo Belwa before fading away.
He explained that the new MMK Training and Mentorship Programme was modeled after that legacy to sustain continuous academic growth in the area.
“We want to bring back that MiODA spirit through a new strategic structure — the MMK Student Training and Mentorship Programme. We are not only training you; we are mentoring you. The programme will continue in cycles — from WAEC registration to JAMB, to securing admission and scholarship support — ensuring every student benefits,” he explained.
Hon. Kallamu emphasized that his motivation was not political but a heartfelt investment in the future of Mayo Belwa, noting that “a society that is not educated is a society that is rotten.” He urged students to take their studies seriously and remain dedicated to success despite life’s challenges.
“Today I’m your representative, but tomorrow someone else will take my place. The best legacy you can have is education. Be focused, be prepared, and take your studies seriously,” he advised.
In a rare show of humility, Hon. Kallamu joined the students during one of the lessons, personally teaching a Geography class — the first time in the area’s history that a serving lawmaker returned to the classroom to teach.
The Chairman of the MMK Education Interventions Committee, Dr. Muhammad Bello, said the committee had achieved remarkable progress since its inauguration, recording significant impact across the basic, secondary, and tertiary levels of education.
Dr. Bello stated that the committee operates with fairness and inclusivity, ensuring that every ward in the constituency benefits from the lawmaker’s education initiatives regardless of religion, tribe, or background.
“Since inauguration, the committee has recorded huge successes in changing the narrative for the good people of Mayo Belwa, irrespective of one’s identity. We have made notable achievements in JAMB registration, scholarship facilitation, and school support programmes,” he said.
According to Dr. Bello, over 150 students were registered for the 2024/2025 JAMB exercise across the five political wards, with over 70 percent meeting the minimum cutoff marks and about 40 percent already gaining admission into various tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
He added that the lawmaker supported several secondary schools during their Speech and Prize Giving Days, and also played a key role in the 2025 Children’s Day celebration, offering financial and logistical support to both public and private schools.
“We also assisted a number of schools to realize their long-term dream of becoming WAEC and NECO examination centres. Among them are Government Secondary School Mayo Belwa and Government Girls Secondary School Didango, which the member funded without hesitation due to his passion for girl-child education,” he explained.
Dr. Bello further revealed that the MMK Training and Mentorship Programme has so far enrolled 165 students 104 females and 61 males drawn fairly from all five wards of the constituency. The programme currently engages 28 tutors, with all allowances and logistics provided promptly by the lawmaker.
He announced upcoming projects to be unveiled soon, including a scholarship scheme, distribution of uniforms and writing materials, and the next round of JAMB registration support for 2025/2026.
“These are only the beginning. More educational interventions will follow, aimed at transforming learning opportunities in our constituency,” he concluded.
The Chairman of Mayo Belwa Local Government Council, Hon. Umar Nashong Gubi, represented by his Vice, Hajiya Hauwa Ndottijo Yerima, commended Kallamu for what she described as a transformative step toward rebuilding the educational foundation of the area.
Mujahid Umar, President of the National Association of Mayo Belwa Students (NAMS), congratulated the beneficiaries and appreciated the lawmaker for investing in the future of young people.
The Executive Secretary of the Education Authority, Mayo Belwa, Mr. Amos Dimas, lauded the programme, describing the authority as “proud of the lawmaker’s commitment to education.”
The PDP Vice Chairman, Ismaila Enough, expressed confidence in Kallamu’s leadership, saying his approach to education is “a legacy of impact that transcends politics.”
In their separate remarks, Modibbo Ahmadu Liman Aminu, Chairman of the Muslim Council, and a representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), thanked the lawmaker for the intervention, saying it would go a long way in boosting education and promoting unity in the area.
The event also featured the presentation of an Award of Recognition to Hon. Kallamu by the Academic Staff Union of Mayo Belwa, in acknowledgment of his education-oriented initiatives.
