The Adamawa State House of Assembly has conducted the second reading of a bill aimed at repealing the Adamawa State Disability Rights Commission Law Number fourteen of twenty sixteen and re-enacting the Adamawa State Persons with Disability Commission Law.
Sponsored by the Member representing Mayo Belwa Constituency, Musa Mahmud Kallamu, the bill seeks to ensure the full integration of Persons with Disabilities into society and to prohibit any form of discrimination against them.
Motion to the second reading of the bill was moved by Kallamu and seconded by Kabiru Mijinyawa of Yola South Constituency during Wednesday’s Plenary.
Kallamu, who serves as the House Committee Chairman on Information, Rehabilitation, Reintegration, and Reconstruction, emphasized that the bill, if passed, will align with current needs by improving the social welfare of Persons with Disabilities.
The lawmaker explained that the bill aims to raise public awareness about the importance of eliminating discrimination against Persons with Disabilities and ensuring their inclusion in government policies and programs.
He urged his fellow lawmakers to support the bill, highlighting its critical role in addressing the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities and ensuring they benefit from the dividends of democracy.
After reading the bill for the second time, Speaker Bathiya Wesley, who presided over the plenary, referred it to the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development for scrutiny.
The committee is expected to report back to the House within two weeks.
