The Adamawa State House of Assembly has directed its Standing Committee on Security to collaborate with federal lawmakers to profer lasting solution to incidents of security harassment in Mubi South Local Government Area.
This decision followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by, the Member representing Mubi South Constituency, Hon Yohanna Sahabo Jauro during Tuesday’s plenary session, following the killing of two youths in Gella, Mubi South.
Hon Jauro informed the House that security personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigerian Army are restricting the Mubi South community from accessing fuel resources, which are a major source of their livelihood.
He noted that the ongoing security operations aimed at preventing the smuggling of fuel out of the country are being enforced within the metropolitan area of the local government, leading to harassment of the local communities and infringement on their civic rights.
The Lawmaker called on the House to advise the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigerian Army to conduct their operations closer to the border points, rather than within the metropolitan area, and to address the issue of numerous checkpoints in the town to prevent future incidents.
Members of the Assembly, including Hon Calvin Kefas of Toungo Constituency and Hon Abubakar Abdullahi of Girei Constituency, supported the motion, noting that similar incidents are occurring in other local governments bordering Cameroon.
They raised concerns about the eighty six security checkpoints between Yola and Mubi, which they argued could lead to the collapse of businesses on which rural communities depend.
Contributing separately, Hon Pwamwakaino Makondo of Numan Constituency, Hon Kate Raymond Mamuno of Demsa Constituency and Muhammed Buba Jidjiwa of Jada/Mbulo Constituency, emphasized the need for security commanders to caution their personnel on the appropriate use of weapons.
Speaker Bathiya Wesley who Presided over the Plenary described the situation as unfortunate and supported the prayers for action to prevent future occurrences.
The House has also observed a minute of silence in honor of the deceased.
